Two field experiments were conducted at Sakha, Agricultural Research Station, Egypt  in two growing seasons during  2021 and 2022 seasons, to study the effect of three irrigation intervals (every 15, 30 and 45 days) and four foliar application with some anti-transpirants (without , linseed Oil  (7%), Pure  Gylatine (1.5 %) Magnesium Carbonate for dusting (250 g / plot), Potassium Silicate (3cm3 K2SiO3 / liter) on the growth, productivity, quality of  Egyptian cotton plants (Super Giza 94 cultivar) and some water relations .The experiment was designed by using split plot design with three replicates. The results showed that, irrigation cotton plants every 30 days significantly increased leaf water content%, chlorophyll (a) in the second season, chlorophyll (b), number of open bolls / plant, earliness % in the second season, seed cotton yield, boll weight, seed index all in the two growing seasons compared with other two irrigation intervals.  On the other hand, irrigation every 15 days was more effective on plant height, number of fruiting branches per plant in both seasons, fineness in the first season, fiber length in the second season and fiber strength in the two seasons. Foliar application of anti- transpirants significantly increased in the most studied characters, leaf water content%, chlorophyll a and b , plant height, number of fruiting branches, number of open bolls, earliness %, seed cotton yield, boll weight , seed index , fiber fineness , fiber strength and fiber length except fiber uniformity which was not affected in the two seasons as compared with the control in the two seasons. The highest values were obtained from potassium silicate compared with other anti- traspirants. Concerning the interaction effect between irrigation interval and anti-transpirants , the data indicated that the application of Potassium Silicate and irrigation cotton plants every 30 days produced the highest significant increase in  leaf water content %, chlorophyll a , chlorophyll b , number of fruiting branches ,seed cotton yield and earliness % in the first and second season.

Silicon Mitigates the Attack of Pests and Diseases on Ipê-Roxo (Handroanthus impetiginosus) Seedlings

Abstract Background Silicon in plants is a structuring element that promotes water and saline stress tolerance and decreases transpiration. The silica accumulated in the cuticle establishes a physical barrier and helps fight against pests and diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the development of ipê-roxo (Handroanthus impetiginosus) seedlings in different environments, and the application of potassium silicate and its efficiency in mitigating the attack of pests and diseases. Methods The experiment was carried out in an agricultural greenhouse and under full sun with silicic doses of 0 and 7.15 mg per plant in a completely randomized design arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme, with 6 replications of 4 seedlings per plot. Plant height, chlorophyll, stem diameter, number of leaves, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total dry matter, height-diameter ratio, root-shoot ratio, root-plant ratio, Dickson quality index, disease severity, and pest intensity were evaluated. Results Silicon application did not confer biometric qualities to the seedlings. The application of silicon conferred 24.6% higher protection against disease severity at a 90% probability level. The protected environment promoted 48.8% more protection against the attack of pests on the seedlings. The silicon application decreases the intensity of pests in the protected environment by 36.3%. Seedlings in a protected environment increase the production of chlorophyll but are 29.6% more susceptible to the severity of diseases. The full sun promoted greater diameters, phytomass, and Dickson quality index by 18%, 73%, and 195%, respectively. Conclusions The bestHandroanthus impetiginosusseedlings were obtained under full sun. Silicon mitigated the attack of pests and diseases onHandroanthus impetiginosusseedlings.

Potassium silicate enhances drought tolerance of Bellis perennis by improving antioxidant activity and osmotic regulators

Ornamental plants can usually encounter various types of environmental stress, which reduce plant productivity. A proper application of fertilizers can improve plantsʼ tolerance to drought stress. Nutrients such as potassium and silicon are known to have beneficial effects. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of Bellis perennis under drought stress (80, 70, and 60% FC) and with the application of potassium silicate (0, 2, and 4 mM). The results showed that potassium silicate (2 and 4 mM) increased K and Si accumulation in plants under drought stress. Plants treated with potassium silicate under drought stress exhibited a lower degree of electrolyte leakage and less MDA accumulation in the following order: 2 and 4 mM potassium silicate. An increase in relative water content and chlorophyll was observed with application of potassium silicate under drought stress. Regardless of potassium silicate, the plant enzymatic defense system was significantly improved compared to non-stressed plants. Potassium silicate enhanced the amount of osmotic regulators (carbohydrate and proline) and secondary metabolites (flavonoids and phenols) compared to control plants regardless of drought stress. The anthocyanin content in the flowers significantly decreased by 32.2% when the plants were treated with 4 mM potassium silicate at 60% FC, compared to 80% FC. In conclusion, potassium silicate mitigated the effects of drought stress, enhanced plant tolerance to drought stress, increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and improved the amounts of osmotic regulators and secondary metabolites.

Evaluation of Methods of Adding Chitosan and Potassium Silicate on Some Soil Fertility and Cowpea (Vigna ungiculata) Plant Productivity

This work aims to evaluate two methods of chitosan and potassium silicate application in 10, 15, and 20 days water irrigation on soil fertility and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) productivit. A field experiment was conducted in saline soil located in Sahl El-Hossinia at El-Sharkia Governorate. The location lies between latitude 32° / 00 to 32° / 15, N and longitude 30° / 50 to 31° / 15 E. For two successive summer seasons 2021 and 2022 cultivated with Cowpea, to study the evaluation of two methods applied for chitosan and silicate potassium combined with or without mineral N fertilizers different rate on some soil fertility and cowpea productivity under irrigation water periods. The experiments were carried out in a split-plotdesign with three replicates. Results obtained that the decreases of soil pH and soil salinity, as well as the increase of available macro-micronutrients contents in soil as affected with potassium silicate foliar application combined with mineral N through intervals irrigation period 10 days compared to other treatments. the increase of plant height (cm), No. of pods/plant, No. of branches /plant, weight 100 seeds (g), weight pods (ton/fed), and seeds yield (ton/fed) with increasing mineral N fertilizer rate combined with potassium silicate foliar application under irrigation water interval 10 days compared with other treatments. Also, the highest mean values of N, P, Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrationsin seeds cowpea 4.16, 0.67, 9.20, 40.22 and 24.64 % respectively as affected with potassium silicate foliar application under irrigation water interval of 10 days than other treatments. From the previous results, we found that the method of foliar application of potassium silicate and chitosan under irrigation water at different periods has significant effects on all soil and plant characteristics compared to the soaking method.

Response of Rose Growth and Flowering to NPK and Potassium Silicates Application and Spraying with Magnesium

This study was conducted in a lath house, Dept. Of Hort. and Landscape, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, Univ. Baghdad, Al-Jadriya during 2022 growing season to investigate influence of mineral fertilizers NPK, potassium silicate and spraying with magnesium (Disper Mg) on some vegetative growth characteristics and flowering of one year’s old of Wiener Charme rose cultivar. Factors of study experiment included addition of two levels of mineral fertilizers NPK (without addition (C0) and 5 g.transplant-1 (C100), while potassium silicate was added with three levels; without added (S0), adding at 200 mg.L-1 (S200) and adding at 300 mg.L-1 (S300), As for magnesium fertilizer treatments, they were sprayed in three levels (0, 7.5, and 15 g.L-1), which are denoted by symbols M0, M7.5, and M15, respectively. Treatments were replicated three times (four plants in experimental unit) at factorial experiment in a RCBD and thus number of plants used was 216 plants. The experimental results showed that chemical fertilizers at 5 g.L-1(C100) significantly increased in plant height of 16.24 cm, leaf nitrogen content of 1.287 %, leaf phosphor content of 0.349 %, flowers number of 17.64 flower.plant-1 and floral stem length of 20.33 cm. Results also showed that potassium silicate application, showed significant superiority in increased in plant height of 18.66 cm, leaf nitrogen content of 1.286 %, leaf phosphor content of 0.374 %, flowers number of 17.25 flower.plant-1 and floral stem length of 20.04 cm. Magnesium spray especially spraying at 15 g.L-1 excelled in increasing of plant height of 16.07 cm, leaf nitrogen content of 1.289 %, leaf phosphor content of 0.367 %, flowers number of 17.08 flower.plant-1 and floral stem length of 20.62 cm. Twice and triple interactions between study factors significantly affected in all studied traits.

Increased efficacy of entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) against leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), incidence on silica enriched rice crop

A possible synergistic effect between biological control agent Beauveria bassiana (Bb) and potassium silicate (K2Sio) for control of leaf folder on rice was investigated at Agricultural Research Station, Nellore (ANGRAU, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh) under field conditions. Three sequential Silicon application in the form of potassium silicate (KSil) was given as foliar spray @ 80 mg/l, when leaf folder population density reached to ETL, B. bassiana @ 1.3x106 conidia/ml application was carried out. Two sequential applications of potassium silicate (two weeks after transplantation and at active tillering stage) + B. bassiana caused leaf folder population reduction of 42.80 per cent over control at 8 days after spraying. This reduction was significantly higher than the mortalities caused by the two single treatments alone (B. bassiana: 17.55 %; Ksil @ 2sprayes: 8.83). This study providing strong evidence of a synergistic effect of the combination treatment on leaf folder mortality. Similarly, three sequential applications of potassium silicate (two weeks after transplantation, at active tillering stage and PI stage) + B. bassiana caused 41.88 % reduction in leaf older population over control at 8 days after spraying, whereas three sequential applications of potassium silicate and application of B. bassiana alone caused 20.57 and 17.55 % reduction in leaf folder incidence, respectively. Indicates application of potassium silicate and B. bassiana alone did not gave as satisfactory results as used in combinations. In the present study the sequential applications of Potassium silicate + B. bassiana gave more promising control of rice leaf folder compared to the application of B. bassiana alone, proving the synergistic effect of the potassium silicate + B. bassiana combination on leaf folder incidence.

Effect of pre-harvest application of salicylic acid, potassium silicate, and calcium chloride, on storability and quality attributes of table grape

Pre-harvest application of potassium silicate, calcium chloride and salicylic acid as spraying treatments is a promising strategy for the management of fruit quality and exhibits a high potential in controlling post-harvest losses of horticultural crops. The aim of this study was to investigate the storability of ‘ARAA18’ cultivar after some pre-harvest treatments that were applied during two consecutive growing seasons. The ‘ARRA 18’ table grape variety is one of the ‘ARRA’ group varieties that have been recently introduced to Egypt. Treatments were applied as foliar sprays at three different stages during the growing season before harvest. The plants were sprayed with potassium silicate (K2SiO3), salicylic acid, and calcium chloride, while untreated vine trees sprayed with water served as control. Mature clusters were harvested, then placed in carton containers and stored in cold storage at 0±1 °C to study the storability of ‘ARRA18’. Records of physical and chemical quality parameters were taken at 7-day intervals. All treatments reduced weight loss, berry softening and decay incidence comparing to control under storage conditions. K2SiO3 generally showed the highest significant effect compared to other treatments and control. Hence, the use of (K2SiO3) at both applied concentrations and (SA) at 100 ppm, significantly proved to be the most effective treatments in keeping the overall quality of stored grapes.

The combined use of silicon and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress on Matthiola incana

Effects of the application of potassium silicate (PS) and an arbuscular mycorrhiza fungus (AMF) (Glomus mosseae) were investigated on alleviating the impacts of drought stress on Matthiola incana in a split-split-plot experiment in two consecutive years. The main plot was assigned to drought stress at three levels of irrigation (25%, 50%, 70%, of field capacity) comparing with control (100% of field capacity) and the sub-plots were assigned to AMF at two levels (0 and 200 g of fungi in pots) and sub-sub plots were assigned to potassium silicate (PS) at three levels (0, 200, and 400 ppm). The application of PS with fungus increased colonization percentage regardless of the drought stress level. Regarding the interaction of drought stress and PS, it was revealed that the application of 400 and 200 ppm of PS elevated the contents of chlorophylls a, b, and total at all drought stress levels. Also, deficit irrigation versus the normal irrigation increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content both in non-AMF and AMF-containing treatments. The lowest catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POX) contents were obtained from the treatment of 400 ppm of PS, while the highest were related to the treatment of 0 ppm of PS. Proline content was reduced by the application of 200 g of AMF and 400 ppm of PS at moderate and severe (25% FC) drought stress levels. In general, at moderate and severe drought stress levels, some physiological traits were improved by the foliar application of 400 ppm PS and Glomus mosseae inoculation.

Alleviation of Cadmium Stress by Silicon Supplementation in Peas by the Modulation of Morpho-Physio-Biochemical Variables and Health Risk Assessment.

Agricultural soil quality degradation by potentially toxic elements, specifically cadmium (Cd), poses a significant threat to plant growth and the health of humans. However, the supplementation of various salts of silicon (Si) to mitigate the adverse effect of Cd on the productivity of peas (Pisum sativum L.) is less known. Therefore, the present investigation was designed to evaluate the exogenous application at various levels (0, 0.50, 1.00 and 1.50 mM) of silicate compounds (sodium and potassium silicates) on pea growth, gaseous exchange, antioxidant enzyme activities and the potential health risk of Cd stress (20 mg kg−1 of soil) using CdCl2. The findings of the study showed that Cd stress significantly reduced growth, the fresh and dry biomass of roots and shoots and chlorophyll content. In addition, electrolyte leakage, antioxidant enzymes and the content of Cd in plant tissues were enhanced in Cd-induced stressed plants. An application of Si enhanced the development of stressed plants by modulating the growth of fresh and dry biomass, improving the chlorophyll contents and decreasing leakage from the plasma membrane. Furthermore, Si addition performed a vital function in relieving the effects of Cd stress by stimulating antioxidant potential. Hence, a significant level of metal protection was achieved by 1.00 mM of potassium silicate application under the Cd levels related to stress conditions, pointing to the fact that the Si concentration required for plant growth under Cd stress surpassed that which was required for general growth, enzymatic antioxidants regulation and limiting toxic metal uptake in plant tissues under normal conditions. The findings of this research work provide a feasible approach to reduce Cd toxicity in peas and to manage the entry and accumulation of Cd in food crops.

Physiological, Anatomical, and Agronomic Responses of Cucurbita pepo to Exogenously Sprayed Potassium Silicate at Different Concentrations under Varying Water Regimes

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses that devastatingly impact squash development, growth, and productivity. Potassium silicate can attenuate the injuries caused by water stress. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the influence of three concentrations of potassium silicate; 10, 15, and 20 g/L on squash plants versus untreated control under three irrigation regimes; 100, 75, and 50% of estimated crop evapotranspiration (ET). The obtained results indicated that moderate (75% ET) or severe (50% ET) drought stress conditions gradually declined photosynthetic pigments, relative water content (RWC), mineral content, physiological parameters, and anatomical characteristics. These deleterious impacts were reflected on all growth and yield traits, i.e., plant height, fresh and dry weight of root and shoot, and fruit yield. On the other hand, the antioxidant enzyme activities; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX) significantly increased under severe drought stress at 50% ET followed by 75% ET. However, all evaluated exogenous applications of potassium silicate substantially enhanced photosynthetic pigments, RWC, N, P, and K content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and anatomical characters (periderm thickness, cortex thickness, midrib thickness, mesophyll thickness, number of xylem vessels per main vascular bundle, thickness of vascular bundle, thickness of collenchymatous tissue and upper epidermis, and thickness of collenchymatous tissue and lower epidermis). These desirable impacts were reflected in enhancing all growth and yield parameters. Conclusively, this study alludes that the exogenously applied of potassium silicate, particularly at 20 g/L, can alleviate the deleterious effects of drought stress and enhance the growth and productivity of squash plants, especially in arid environments.

Effect of foliar-applied potassium silicate on growth, yield, fruit quality and antioxidant activity of tomato plants grown under deficit irrigation

When water is scarce, it is highly important to provide plants with water at critical stages to improve yield with high water use efficiency (WUE). Transpiration reduction is an effective and necessary procedure for conserving irrigation water while ensuring plant survival and protecting foliage from drought damage, and thus increasing water productivity. Foliar application of growth stimulators is one of the most important ways for lowering transpiration rates and reducing the negative effects of drought stress. The effects of foliar potassium silicate application as a growth stimulator, as well as water-sprayed plants, on growth, some physiological parameters, yield components, and water use efficiency of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivar "Elisa" grown during summer season under three irrigation levels (100, 75 or 50% ETc, of the estimated crop evapotranspiration) were investigated. The field experiment was conducted during 2019 and 2020 seasons at the Experimental Farm of Vegetable Crops Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Cairo. Giza Governorate, Egypt.

Effect of Potassium Silicate and Irrigation on Grain Nutrient Uptake and Water Use Efficiency of Wheat Under Calcareous Soils

In calcareous soil, two field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of two potassium silicate treatments (with and without) and three irrigation levels (100, 80 and 60%, of crop evapotranspiration, abbreviated as IW100, IW80 and IW60, respectively) on wheat yield and nutrient uptake and water use efficiency (WUE). The experimental design was a strip plots design in randomized complete block arrangement with three replicates. Findings reveal that potassium silicate improved grain weight spike−1 by about 1.06 times whether with IW80 or IW60. Also, seed index increased by 1.03, 1.06 and 1.04 times owing to potassium silicate in the 1st season under IW100, IW80 and IW60 treatments, respectively. Application of potassium silicate surpassed the control treatment by about 1.05, 1.4 and 1.07 times for biological straw and grain yields under IW80. The interaction of IW80 × potassium silicate significantly equaled IW100 × potassium silicate for P, S Mg and Mn uptake in both seasons as well as N, K and Zn uptake in the 1st season and Fe uptake in the 2nd season. IW80 or IW60 with potassium silicate application were the efficient combinations for improving WUE in both growing seasons.

Foliar application of potassium silicate, potassium fulvate and betaine improve summer-time tomato yield by promoting plant nitrogen and potassium uptake

Abstract During the summer months, greenhouse tomato production is challenged by the heat, causing yield reduction; therefore, we conducted a study to test the effectiveness of different foliar spray compositions for the improvement of Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme ‘Qianxi’ nutrition uptake and fruit yield. Two forms of silicon, two kinds of organic nitrogenous compounds and water as the control factor were two-two paired to become nine different recipes, which were as follows: CK (H2O), ISi (K2SiO3), organic silicon (OSi), potassium fulvate (BSFA), BSFA + ISi, BSFA + OSi, betaine (GB), GB + ISi and GB + OSi. The plants were sprayed three times during the period of the first, second and third truss fruit expansions with a 2-week interval. As a result, BSFA or K2SiO3 generated higher yield in plants compared with the other compositions. Also, K2SiO3 significantly enhanced the total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium accumulation in fruit and the whole plant. Comparing across the nine recipes, BSFA + ISi, ISi and GB had improved the fruit yield by 17%, 12.7% and 9.5%, performing the best. BSFA + ISi, ISi and GB also improved the plant nitrogen uptake by 8.2%, 18.8% and 9.8%, as well as the potassium uptake by 16.2%, 12.3% and 15.2%, compared with CK, respectively. Thus, K2SiO3, BSFA and GB stimulated the plant nitrogen and potassium uptake, which improved the marketable yield.

Effects of Funneliformis mosseae and Potassium Silicate on Morphological and Biochemical Traits of Onion Cultivated under Water Stress

Water stress negatively impacts the physiology of plants, affecting their growth and development. It is considered among the most important environmental factors responsible for reduced crop production. In this regard, biofertilizers may be considered significant for their reparative properties to increase stress tolerance in crop plants. We studied the effects of water stress on the morphological and biochemical characteristics of onion plants with AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) and potassium silicate application. The water stress significantly affected all the studied traits, each with minimum recorded levels. Plants that received combined treatments of AMF and potassium silicate showed maximum percent increments in all the studied characteristics, e.g., plant height (156.7%), weight of bulb (416.8%), antioxidant activity (224.0%), membrane stability index (74.5%), relative water content (87.3%), and total soluble solids (63.71%). Therefore, the study demonstrated that all the investigated variables were affected negatively by water stress. However, bio-fortification of onion plants with silicates and AMF inoculation may be considered useful for functional food production, with numerous health promoting properties.

Improving wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) antioxidative defense mechanisms against salinity stress by exogenous application of potassium silicate

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the beneficial effects of seed priming and foliar spray of potassium silicate on antioxidant activities under different salinity levels, thereby potentially improving wheat growth. Seeds were soaked into solutions containing potassium silicate (K2SiO3, 1.5 mM) for 6 h, while foliar spray with K2SiO3 (4 mM) was applied at the early and the late stages of tillering. Lake Urmia water was used to prepare salinity levels of 0, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, and 14 dS m − 1. For such traits as anthocyanin, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activity, an initial increase was observed at lower salinity levels; higher salinities subsequently decreased these traits or they remained mostly constant. Salinity also increased phenol, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and polyphenol oxidase, but decreased flavonoid, nitrate content, and nitrate reductase activity. Seed priming and foliar spray provided effective approaches to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) manifestation in wheat grown under saline conditions. The improved antioxidant defense abilities by seed priming and foliar spray alleviated the oxidative damage of proteins and lipids and improved nitrate content and nitrate reductase activity.

Application of two forms of silicon and their impact on the postharvest and the content of bioactive compounds in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruits

The metabolic activity of the fruits continues even after harvest, which results in the loss of bioactive compounds, a decrease in the quality of the fruits, softening and browning, among other negative effects. The use of certain elements such as silicon can improve postharvest quality, since it is involved in the metabolic, physiological and structural activity of plants, moreover can increase the quality of the fruits. In addition, nanotechnology has had a positive impact on crop yield, nutritional value, fruit quality and can improve antioxidant activity. For these reasons, the use of beneficial elements such as silicon in the form of nanoparticles can be a viable option to improve the characteristics of the fruits. In the present study was evaluated the application of potassium silicate (125, 250 and 500 mg L−1) and SiO2 nanoparticles (125, 250 and 500 mg L−1) during the development of the crop. The results showed that the application of silicon (potassium silicate and silicon nanoparticles) increased the content of total soluble solids (up to 15.6% higher than control), titratable acidity (up to 38.8% higher than control), vitamin C (up to 78.2% higher than control), phenols (up to 22% higher than control), flavonoids (up to 64.6% higher than control), and antioxidant activity in lipophilic compounds (up to 56.2% higher than control). This study suggests that the use of silicon can be a good option to increase the content of bioactive compounds in cucumber fruits when they are applied during the development of the crop.

Chrysanthemum is one of the most beautiful flowers and probably the oldest plant grown commercially in different parts of the world. Chrysanthemum, like all other plants, is susceptible to attack by various pests and diseases. The use of silicon has been shown to minimize damage caused by insect and also increase shelf life. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of potassium silicate in pest resistance and postharvest longevity of chrysanthemum. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Espírito Santo - Itapina Campus, the treatments consisted of four doses of potassium silicate - Sifol® (2, 4, 6 and 8 mL L−1) and a control treatment without foliar application of potassium silicate applied to chrysanthemum cv. Zembla. Leaf application of potassium silicate reduced the incidence of cercosporiosis and thrips in chrysanthemum leaves. Chrysanthemum leaf and flower longevity increased when potassium silicate doses were applied. It is recommended for chrysanthemum cv. Zembla applications of 0.6 and 0.8 mL L−1 potassium silicate.
